Greenhouse Gas Emission Study
REEC research also encompasses developing technologies to understand better the Delmarva region’s greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter. Researchers develop Smart Sensing Technologies to profile and quantify emissions and sources at the local and state levels. The project would provide unique research, educational, and environmental stewardship opportunities to its stakeholders (e.g., researchers, students, and citizens) that will develop cutting-edge technologies of smart sensing, photonics, and data science for applications in environmental research and will train the next generation of environmental researchers. The main objectives are:
- Develop high spatiotemporal resolution maps of emissions and particulate matter from diverse sources, including poultry, agriculture, and chemical refineries, and investigate their air-quality impact on the region.
- Integrate ground-based sensor data with satellite observations of regional emissions and pollutants.
- Engage students in research, product development, and develop certificate courses in photonics sensor systems development and field monitoring.
- Create outreach and educational programs for environmental awareness in the local community.
